BEST OF 2015 – Best of the Genres

Continuing my look at the best films of 2015, let’s look at the best of each genre.

You can watch the trailers for all the movies by clicking on the title of the movie.

Trainwreck2

BEST COMEDY – “Trainwreck

Runner Up – “Ted 2

+ I am one of the few people who really liked Ted 2 and I actually think it is one of the best comedy sequels of all-time.  But “Trainwreck” is a complete comedy.  It’s hysterically funny, with stellar performances and a lot of heart and emotion.  It is the crowning achievement of Amy Schumer’s breakout year.

MadMax4

BEST ACTION MOVIE – “Mad Max: Fury Road

Runner Up – “Furious 7

+ “Furious 7” is mindless action at its best and a perfect sendoff for Paul Walker.  “Mad Max: Fury Road” is transcendent.  It is everything we want from a movie and more.  It’s thrilling, fun, entertaining, and one of the best movies of 2015.

insideout1

BEST ANIMATED MOVIE – “Inside Out

Runner Up – “The Peanuts Movie

+ “Inside Out” is the best Pixar movie since “Toy Story 3” and its most creative in almost a decade.  It is a return to form for the great studio and gives us hope for the future.  “The Peanuts” movie is an incredibly sweet and cute blast of nostalgia.

Bite

BEST HORROR MOVIE – “Bite

Runner Up – “It Follows

+ “It Follows” was wildly original.  It was a blast from the past that reminded of 80’s horror films.  It was the most bizarre monster movie I’ve seen and just a blast to watch.  “Bite” is a movie most of you probably never heard of, but it is a vile, disgusting, creepy film that is the definition of midnight madness.

Creed5

BEST SEQUEL – “Creed

Runner Up – “Star Wars: The Force Awakens

+ “Creed” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” are going to end up high on my Top 10 of 2015 list, so this was a doozy to pick.  First of all, both of these films, amazingly, are the seventh installments of their respective franchises.  They are both very similar in that they pay homage to the original films, yet use new stories to separate themselves.  Why I placed “Creed” higher is because “The Force Awakens” is a “Star Wars” movie in every way, where as “Creed” is a “Rocky” movie, yet is also different enough in tone and style, that it really reinvents the series.

Amy2

BEST DOCUMENTARY – “Amy

Runner Up – “The Nightmare

+ “Amy” is an emotional powerhouse that resurrects a fallen star.  It is perfectly made and that shows us the tragedy of the super talented Amy Winehouse.  Have to show love to “The Nightmare” though, as it is one of the scariest movies I have ever seen and is an incredibly fascinating documentary.

son of saul

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM – “Son of Saul

Runner Up – “Wild Tales

+ Though I absolutely loved the creativity and insanity of “Wild Tales”, there weren’t a lot of movies better than “Son of Saul”.  The harrowing, terrifying, first-person nightmare is, in my opinion, the best movie about the Holocaust ever.

James White

BEST INDIE MOVIE – “James White

Runner Up – “Youth

+ These films are very similar.  Both are character studies about men dealing with an emotional issue in their life.  They also both feature two great performances and stick with you long after viewing.  It was hard choosing which was best, but the performance of Christopher Abbot as James White is something to marvel.
